Ten years ago, when my Ruth learned that her cancer had returned and spread, with a life expectancy of months, we made one of our best ever decisions: to compile video recordings that I could replay in future years. These included her conversations at family meals and celebrations, reading bedtime stories to the grandchildren, strolling round a National Trust estate, decorating the Christmas tree with the assistance of mulled wine (!), completing a cherished art project….
Every year on the anniversary of her death, and some other times, I replay edited clips so that her face, the way she talked and laughed, her mannerisms and moods remain vividly alive and are a source of delight (maybe with tears). I’ve found this an extraordinarily helpful way of remembering and celebrating the past whilst living and flourishing in the present.
